    Cold December
It is almost February. Happy New Year! Time to round up drafts posts from, um, December. I’ve been working a bit obsessively on what I think is a pretty great engine for turning any RSS feed, even from statically generated sites, into beautiful subscribable newsletters. You can now sign-up for an e-mail subscription to drafts, where I am actually writing these days. If you are interested in the RSS-to-E-Mail service, …

RISC-V Bytes: Accessing the Pinecil UART with picoprobe
This post is the second in a RISC-V Bytes subseries on the PINE64 Pinecil soldering iron and development board. Previous and subsequent posts can be found under the RISC-V Bytes category. In the most recent Pinecil post, we walked through how to solder the header pins on the Pinecil breakout board. With the headers attached, we can now communicate with the Pinecil’s microcontroller via a number of protocols. Today we …

On Staying Vaguely Sane In A Post-Truth World
Or, why I thought the joke in my last comic was actually a bit shit but posted it anyway… Last night I posted a new cartoon over on comic.conniptions.org featuring Rishi Sunak. I’ve not drawn him before and it’s been a good while since I last drew a political caricature, so I was pleased with how that part of it came out. But the joke, such as it is, no …

    Past Missteps
Several years ago, when I was much stupider, I briefly interned for a reasonably well-known agent. I let her know ahead of time that I had a vacation lined up where I would be off grid about a month after I started, which she was on board with. However, due to some wires getting crossed on my end and some stressful visa shenanigans, my last email to her before I …

    The Most Realistic Nymphs Ever!!
These nymphs have to be the most realistic nymphs I have ever seen. I ordered both patterns. I can't wait to give them a try on the Sipsey and Smith Lake. The bodies of these nymphs are hard body and have weight.

I'm giving a lecture on 'crowdsourcing at the British Library' for students on UCL's MSc Sustainable Heritage taking the course 'Crowd-Sourced and Citizen Data for Cultural Heritage' (BENV0114). Failing Upwards: Put on your own mask before assisting others (Pt2)
If you haven't read part 1, check it out first, as this is a continuation. From poor leaders, I've learned what doesn't work: breaking the team's trust, operating without transparency (a lack of communication), employing a destructive and unempathetic approach, micromanaging, and setting people up for failure. These traits have stood out as particularly detrimental in my observations. In contrast to the negative leadership traits I've observed, my experiences with friends, …

    Auto-revert PDFs in Emacs
When I'm looking at pdf files in Emacs, I use =doc-view mode=. And usually I'm looking at pdf files because I'm writing a screenplay in Fountain mode. So I'm making changes to the source file a lot, and the pdf is constantly changing. But the pdf in Emacs isn't changing! That is, Emacs has read the file into memory, and displays that memory as a pdf, no matter what has …
