    Wayne Shorter, Footprints Live!
Album of the Week, November 23, 2024 As we discussed last time, Herbie Hancock went through a transition back to acoustic jazz following the success of his “Rockit” band, and with a few exceptions stayed in this lane. His former Miles Davis (and VSOP) bandmate Wayne Shorter was in a different place. Following his departure from the Miles band after Bitches Brew, Wayne cofounded one of the bedrock-foundation fusion bands, …

*Councillor* Pastor CAO President Chief William J. Denby LLP?
You'll never guess who has "officially" announced his candidacy for the City of Kawartha Lakes Ward 5 By-Election (you will absolutely guess, because of course it is Bill Denby). PRESS RELEASE!! Presumably, this news was broken first in Bill's top-secret KLTPA group, and this may, in fact, be what Bill has been sharing to his Facebook timeline (he will never grasp that people who are not in those groups are …

Antenna diodes in the Pentium processor
I was studying the silicon die of the Pentium processor and noticed some puzzling structures where signal lines were connected to the silicon substrate for no apparent reason. Two examples are in the photo below, where the metal wiring (orange) connects to small square regions of doped silicon (gray), isolated from the rest of the circuitry. I did some investigation and learned that these structures are "antenna diodes," special diodes …

    Boskoop redux
When I published my review of Belle de Boskoop in 2011, a reader told me, ❝ My samples look quite different.... Does yours have the 3 pronounced ribs on it?❞ The implication (delivered diplomatically) was, are you sure you got this right, dude? title="Belle de Boskoop apple"> When I published my review of Alexander earlier this year, another reader told me, Looks like Belle de Boskoop to me, and the …

Lively Lately #75: Here and gone
The last month has been…a month. A lot happened. I think sharing more things later, in other posts, may make for better storytelling…something more full. Because there are things I want to talk about “now” vs. things I don’t want to feel like I’m repeating later. I’ve never lost a job before. I was one of those people you hear about on the internet having a cool, obscure job. I …
