    Meet the Maker: Rach Lloyd
Hello, my name is Rach and I'm a printmaker from Shropshire. I go by the name Rach Lloyd Press, and pride myself on making all of my print-runs and editions in very small numbers, so people can own a unique piece of artwork at an affordable price. I am a multidisciplinary artist, and always want to continue to try new things and experiment - this means when I look at …

How Ivan Bunin and Vasily Grossman spent the war - He was in the countryside then for the last time in his life
Without planning it I recently read three books by Russian writers from three different strands of Russian literature: Andrei Platonov’s Chevengur (1929 /1972, tr. Robert and Elizabeth Chandler) in the Gogolian and Dostoyevskian strand, Ivan Bunin’s Dark Avenues (1943/1946) following Turgenev and Chekhov, and A Writer at War: Vasily Grossman with the Red Army (2005, ed. and tr. by Anthony Beevor and Luba Vinogradova) for a Tolstoyan. I will save …

    Singin’ in the Rain
Singin’ in the Rain (1952) is widely considered to be one of the greatest–if not the greatest–film musicals. With numerous iconic songs and dances, in addition to the performance of the title number cemented in film history, there is much to celebrate in relation to this beloved classic. Andrew Buchman’s Singin’ in the Rain: Oxford Guides to Film Musicals is an exceptionally thorough exploration of this movie musical. Buchman’s impressive …

Experimenting with GitHub merge queues; could you send me a PR?
I’m evaluating the usability of GitHub merge queues under a set of conditions that makes merge queues hard: pull requests have a high probability of failing CI when merged together despite passing on their own. (Plus, GitHub’s implementation has like 11 different knobs, and the documentation is somewhat limited.) I could make a bunch of PRs on my own, but that’s boring, and I’m not good at finding edge cases …

Singular Joys: Ridiculous enemy behaviour in Ghost Squad
Singular Joys is a series of short-form blogs that highlight a single element of a game that has surprised, intrigued, or delighted me. It’s the best bit of something, distilled into 500 words or less. Ghost Squad is everything you could want from a lightgun shooter. Its action is chaotic, its shooting is sublime, and its terrorist antagonists are profoundly – beautifully! – dumb. Originally released in arcades in 2004, …

Work stops on Greenwich Travelodge site with £2m bill unpaid
Work on an 18-storey Travelodge on the Greenwich Peninsula has stopped after the developer failed to pay a £2 million bill to the council. Plans for the building, which is set to feature a distinctive “sail” design on the roof, were approved in January 2021 and signed off last year. Councillors had demanded a landmark […] The post Work stops on Greenwich Travelodge site with £2m bill unpaid appeared first …

The Guardians of the Galaxy will land in the Ultimate Universe in January
The Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to the Ultimate Universe — or at least a new version of the team is. Star-Lord, Captain Marvel, Cosmo and the Ultimate Nullifier will make their debut in January’s The Ultimate #8 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri. The story in that issue will focus on America Chavez, as a group of galactic travelers “from a far-flung, Maker-free future” show up looking for …

Special: Walking the coast of Slovenia 2 (Italian border to Izola)
September 2024 For my second day I would at least be walking the coast! First however I needed to get to the border. On the coast, no buses cross the border. Instead buses from Slovenia run right up to the border, then turn back, the same is true on the Italian side so if you want to cross you have to do that bit on foot! To be honest I …

2 Years of Early Retirement (With Numbers)
I QUIT MY JOB TWO YEARS AGO! Isn’t that crazy? I can’t quite believe it’s been two years of early retirement. Two years with no boss, no annoying colleagues, and living every day like it’s the weekend. I can hardly believe it, and can’t wait to dive into it. What are my finances like, after […] The post 2 Years of Early Retirement (With Numbers) first appeared on Financial Mechanic.

    Travelers notebook: this far
I guess I have used part of it for a week now, and the whole thing for 5 ish days. What I like about it is that it is much smaller and lighter. I also like that it is fewer things than before. What I don’t like about it is that travelers notebook refills don’t open flat.
