    The Dublin comeback
The September beer festival at the RDS in Dublin was a fixture on Ireland's calendar between 2011 and 2017. A later move to other venues was less successful and it all wrapped up before Covid. This year saw a tentative return, on a smaller scale and in a different part of the venue, but still filling the remit as required. 20 Irish brewers and a handful of international representatives took …

Heartbreaking Images That Capture the Harsh Reality of the 1980s AIDS Crisis
The 1980s saw the AIDS epidemic surge to catastrophic levels, leaving communities devastated and countless lives hanging in the balance. Across the U.S. and beyond, people were dying at an alarming rate, while others were gripped by fear of a mysterious disease they barely understood but believed could soon sweep through the population like wildfire. […]

Ryan Dahl Talks Deno on The Changelog
Ryan Dahl was on The Changelog to talk about Deno 2 specifically and his work on JavaScript more broadly. What follows are a few things that stood out to me. His Regrets From Node Are Now in Deno I think it’s interesting that Ryan’s famous talk 10 Things I Regret About Node.js served as the manifesto and launching point for Deno. And yet, he’s now re-introduced some of those regrets …

I got my haircut yesterday. When Hillary asked “How short do you want it?”, I replied, uncharacteristically, “pretty short,” and then let chips fall where they may. This is as short a haircut as I’ve ever had. I kinda like it.

    Superfresco!
I saw this on Scroobius Pip's twitch channel on Friday, and it is glorious. I'm not 100% sure what it's advertising. I think it's textured wallpaper, but surely you don't want to be talking about what "must come down" if you're advertising wallpaper? Anyway, the important thing is that it s unnecessarily, gratuitously funky. Watch until the end; I guarantee it's worth it.

The Weekly Challenge 289 (Prolog Solutions)
The examples used here are from the weekly challenge problem statement and demonstrate the working solution. Part 1: Third Maximum You are given an array of integers, @ints. Write a script to find the third distinct maximum in the given array. If a third maximum doesn’t exist then return the maximum number. The majority of the work can be done in a couple of lines. We need only sort the …

    Weeknote 39/2024
I’m composing this sat under an electric blanket on a relatively low setting, watching Brighton & Hove Albion come from 2-0 to score three goals after half-time. They’re currently winning 3-2. Waking up after half-time is something my daughter’s team is good at doing. They won 9-1 on Saturday, with her scoring a hat-trick, and lost 7-2 on Sunday. We spent the afternoon at Six BALTIC, the restaurant on the …

    Weeknote 95
We had our all-staff away day on Tuesday in a somewhat dark, stuffy and dated venue beside the Thames at London Blackfriars. It was nice to see a few folks in-person from further afield and chat. The dominance of strategies about more mobile apps and AI technology innovation for more GOVUK services didn't entirely please the interests of myself or many of my colleagues. On Wednesday I had the opportunity …
