Happy Cafe, Downham Road, London N1
This might be the happiest place on earth. I was walking along Regents Canal when I saw this sign. It was noonish. I hadn't eaten. What more invitation might I need? My only fear was that I might be lead to some ironic hipster place that only did oats. Then there was this sign. I found this reassuring. And I needn't have worried because the Happy Cafe is godamm perfect. …

American Soldiers vs. an Aristocratic Ghost
In 1944, before the D-Day landing and while WWII was still grinding on, MGM made a heartwarming movie about American soldiers successfully diffusing a notorious British ghost. The Canterville Ghost (1944) stars Robert Young, as an affable US soldier, and Charles Laughton as a blue-blooded apparition who’s been haunting a castle for centuries. It also stars Margaret O’Brien as a … Continue reading →

Books I read in October 2024 - the old, care-free days of Wuthering Heights
I should do one of these “what I read” bits before October becomes too distant. I should also mention my health. A little over a year ago a surgeon of genius removed a cancerous tumor from my liver, taking much of my liver along with it. My recovery went well, and my liver grew back without, so far, another tumor. An experimental immunotherapy treatment likely had a role in that. …

Not Enough Months But At Least There Are Still Cons
RinCon is coming up in Tucson this weekend and I’m gonna run myself ragged catching up with games I’ve wanted to run but simply haven’t had time: Inevitable, an Arthurian-Western mashup about doomed knights holding off the fall of their kingdom. Cowboys With Big Hearts, a Jason Morningstar jam about sickly cowboys headed off for one last act of justice. Zoetrope: Death Didn’t Take, an improv time travel game with …

An interactive that gets your students thinking about medians, percentiles, and their own sleeping habits.
My students struggle with sleeping and are distracted by electronics. This interactive activity allows them to think about their sleep relative to norms regarding age and sex. It also dives deeply into how sleep changes over a person's lifespan, which is a topic suitable for non-static classes like Health or Developmental. https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/interactive/2024/sleep-data-survey-americans/*You need a WaPo subscription or paywall buster to get to this interactive. Hammer House of Horror: Rankings & Wrap up.
If only to distract myself from the fact that the flaming jalopy which is the western world just failed to clear the chasm jump which might have kept the wheels rolling a while longer, here is a little post to celebrate the fact that, after three consecutive Octobers, I’ve finally managed to watch, and write something about, every episode of the 1980 ‘Hammer House of Horror’ series. Not exactly a …

Clip of the Week: November 13, 2024
This is what happens when you hire Florida Man as your attorney: Attorney William F. Koegler had been acting as special prosecutor in the Miami (Florida) Court of Crimes all the week. Then he changed his role and defended a youth charged with stealing a watch. He ended his speech to the jury with the Read More

Last week, reverse-cycle air conditioning was finally installed at our place and my god, it’s so much more efficient than the plug-in electric heaters we used to have to put everywhere. Judging by the last few days, we’re going to save hundreds of dollars a year on power bills. More money for nappies, hooray!

    The Socials
A little more than a year ago I wrote about the end of social media. I think a lot of what I wrote there holds true and is more obvious from this perspective, especially if you consider the trajectory X/witter is on. Regardless of how you personally feel about Musk or any of his choices (like removing block functions and unbanning abusers) the fact that he’s moved from apolitical to …

Cabel Sasser on Wes Cook (→ youtube.com)
I suspect this will do the rounds, as it thoroughly deserves to. Try to watch it without spoilers. It’s Cabel Sasser’s talk from XOXO this year, it’s about art and memory and what lives on of us after we pass, and it’s lovely. #

    Port handwritten naming
As well as a complete layout overhaul, Port’s recent redesign introduced an intriguing approach to its covers. Instead of a constant logo, the magazine title is handwritten by the issue’s cover star. Such flexibility is extremely rare. Whether a small indie or major mainstream title, the logo has long been the most sacrosanct part of a publication, the central part of the magazine’s visual identity. Even a complete redesign of …

The `` and `` elements are getting an upgrade
Big fan of <details> and <summary> checking in but what I don’t like is having to add extra elements to present a nice look and feel for them. Dealing with the disclosed content also requires extra elements if you want to apply a layout, for example. It looks like that is changing though! I’m especially looking forward to giving the new ::details-content pseudo-element a test drive, that’s for sure. Check …

How could they vote for him?
By now you will have probably read thousands of words about Trump’s sweeping election victory, so what can I hope to add? The biggest puzzle for me, and I suspect many others both inside and outside the US, has always been to understand Trump’s appeal to voters. After all, unlike 2016, this time they must have known what they were voting for. In Europe we sometimes pretend that someone who …

the 2025 Kennet and Avon Canal calendar
The new calendar is here! This year I've gone back to people on the canal; so there's incidents from daily life and history, like the workboats - here's John Knill in 1950, delivering a cargo to Newbury; and Ishtar, keeping boaters supplied with coal last winter; and the CRT paddle boat, dashing off to clear vegetation in the Long Pound. And a couple of cross-section pictures, which are always a …
