How Replaceable are Seattle's Transit Routes?
“Seattle AM General trolleybus downtown, 1986” by Steve Morgan is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. Ridership-based route productivity measurements—those which compare a route’s average number of riders to its cost of operation—are common within transit planning. Unproductive routes will be the first considered for elimination when funding is tight. Those that perform well may merit additional service when the budget supports expansion. I have previously argued that ridership-based measurements are, …

A Chronological Viewing Order For All of Lucy Worsley's Documentaries.
TV In the past couple of weeks the latest series of Lucy Worsley Investigates has been released on BBC Two and the iPlayer. Not knowing what to expect, I headed into the first series, starting with The Witch Hunts and was struck once again with Worsley's ability to present difficult subjects with intellectual rigour but in an inclusive style that doesn't patronise the viewer. Until recently, every morning I'd watch …

Short Story Wednesday: "Die Like a Dog" by Rex Stout
I am continuing my reread of Rex Stout's novellas. "Die Like a Dog" is a 66-page novella in the Nero Wolfe series. It is one of three stories in Three Witnesses, published in 1957. I have featured some of my favorite novellas by Stout in previous posts in the last year. However, this story might be my absolute favorite of Nero Wolfe stories in shorter format. It is unusual because it …

10 amber & red flag behaviors I dismissed or tolerated
You know that feeling of odd regret that happens after the fact, when you’re able to look at something more objectively? That’s kind of where I am right now, and it’s also where I’ve been. It’s not an easy place to be. There are red flags and green flags, but the flags in between are amber: warning signs that might indicate a problem. Photo by Joe Roberts on Unsplash Natalie …

    Making "this" less annoying
Now that I have a job where I’m writing web components full time, I see the this keyword more than I ever have in my whole life. It’s not a problem, per se, but you can see how it’s a little repetitive. I started wondering what my options were to fix this minor annoyance and the ShopTalk Discord helped me find a simple way and an over-the-top way to fix …

One Thing I Like About Alien: Romulus
When Alien: Romulus first came out, the buzz around it was so good that I was sure I was going to have to do the rarest of rare things in 2024: go see a movie in a theater. But after the initial wave of good vibes, the mood on the internet seemed to sour, with more and more people complaining that the movie was too derivative of Alien and Aliens …

Shell: benchmark the difference between two Git branches with hyperfine
hyperfine is a neat tool for benchmarking commands. If you provide it multiple commands, its output includes a comparison, saying which is the fastest, and by how much. I often find I want to benchmark before and after some change, by running the same test command on my main Git branch and a feature branch. Here is my hyperfine recipe to do that, using the --prepare option to switch branches …
